    Chargers Boys Soccer Falls to East Brunswick in Pool Play in Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament

    SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood High School boys varsity soccer team was back in action on Thursday for the second game of group play in a new format for the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. Spotswood is in Group D along with Old Bridge, East Brunswick, Carteret and Piscataway High Schools. The tournament is structured like the World Cup with group play leading to a knockout round. The Chargers played the opening game of group play against Old Bridge last week.

    Spotswood hosted East Brunswick High School on Thursday for the second game of Group D play. The Chargers lost to the Bears 2-1. Spotswood's loss dropped the team's group play record to 0-2. The Chargers lost to Old Bridge 3-2 in the opening game.

    East Brunswick scored one goal in the first half and one in the second. Spotswood narrowed the Bears' lead to one when Joe Nardino headed in a corner by Cooper Day in the second half. Ben Lyons and Royal Binah scored the goals for East Brunswick. Maksym Hrunski made 10 saves for East Brunswick. Don Spicuzzo had six saves for the Chargers.

    Group D pool play continues on Tuesday when the Chargers travel to Joe Medwick Park to take on Carteret High School. Carteret has an overall season record of 6-5-1. The Ramblers beat Piscataway 5-3 and tied Old Bridge 1-1 in Group D play. Spotswood defeated Carteret last month in regular season play. Game time is at 4 p.m.
