BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Bridgewater Township Police Department has received reports of political signs being stolen from residential properties, according to a release from the department Thursday.

“We understand that these signs are an important expression of personal beliefs and community engagement,” Police Chief John Mitzak said in the release.

Mitzak said the department is offering a number of recommendations to deter theft of the signs in the future.

    • Secure Placement – Signs should be positioned in well-lit areas that are visible from the street. They could be placed closer to the home rather than at the curbs.
    • Use Sturdy Materials – People should opt for signs that are made of durable materials, as heavier signs may be more difficult to remove.
    • Install Security Cameras – If it is possible, cameras or motion-activated lights can be installed near the area where the signs are displayed. Cameras that are visible can deter potential thieves.
    • Install Air Tags – Air tags can be placed on the signs in order to track locations of movement.
    • Report Incidents – If a sign is stolen, report it to the police, and provide any relevant information, including descriptions of suspects or vehicles. Residents can call 908-722-4111.
    • Engage Neighbors – Residents can talk to neighbors about the issue, because forming a community watch can help keep an eye out for suspicious activity in the area.
    • Consider Alternative Displays – Residents can use window decals or banners that are more difficult to remove than traditional lawn signs.
    • Stay Informed –Follow local news and community forums for updates on similar incidents in the area.

According to the release, going onto someone's property and stealing signs is a crime of theft and trespassing. Anyone caught will be arrested and prosecuted.

Anyone with concerns or needing assistance should call 908-722-4111.
