According to the Jersey City Theater Center, ‘Verses @ Work’ is an autobiographical narrative, a coming-of-age story, and a poetic journey through a transformative period in New York City’s cultural history.

In “pre” and “post” 9/11 NYC, Work paints the picture of gentrification sieging historically underserved communities while Hip-Hop music and culture reflects the city’s changing landscape.

Sensing an opportunity, Work and his cohort look to make their mark on live music through NYC’s vibrant nightlife amid a wave of urban renewal, according to the Jersey City Theater Center.

Through his hopes, dreams loves, and losses, Work finds the one constant variable is his verses.

According to the Jersey City Theater Center, Work’s tale explores the layered systems of society and poses questions about the role institutionalized racism plays in the trajectory of a life, and that not only is he typecast as an actor but that “there are ‘roles’ prepared for a Black male in America.”

In this piece, Work seeks to illustrate how he looks to reconcile the world’s expectations and his expectations of himself.
