YORKTOWN, N.Y.—Senior night is always a special night, especially when it is one honoring 14 people who were invaluable to the program.

Yorktown (9-3) honored those seniors in fine style with a 3-0 victory against visiting White Plains on Oct. 10.

Annie Durante (captain), Brie Gaccino (captain), Norah Guss (captain), Clare Ryan (captain), Dana DeCourcey, Hannah Salles, Erin Horton, Marissa Madden, Katie Keaveney, Olivia Flaim, Alexis Warren, Isabelle Bevilacqua, Ava Cunneen, and Sheridan Gorman (manager) were the seniors honored.

“This senior class has meant a lot to the program,” said Yorktown coach Courtney Hyndman. “They were the second graduating class that came through this program that I have had the honor of coaching for all four years. Because of them, this program has grown to what it is. They have encouraged other athletes to try playing field hockey and have helped teach our future players and develop their skills. They set the standard for this program and have been incredible role models.”

As for its play, Hyndman said that her team produced a solid team effort, moved the ball well, and came up with big defensive stops.

“We kept the ball on our offensive end the majority of the time,” Hyndman said.

Guss scored to put the Huskers up 1-0 at halftime.

“The seniors stepped up and knew they had to execute every opportunity,” Hyndman said. “We had a wonky start but they (her players) turned it on and got the first goal of the game in the second quarter on a corner.”

Sophomore Lily Diaz gave the Huskers a boost of momentum by extending the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the third quarter on a corner.

“After scoring once in the first half, the whole team really wanted another goal, so we pushed ourselves to hustle on offense,” Diaz said. “The ball came to me during the corner, and with some direction from my teammates and coaches, I was able to pull to the side of the defense and place the shot. It felt great to widen the lead in this game, especially since it was our senior night.”

    Gaccino assisted on Diaz’s goal.

“I was able to assist Lily because she was in the right position at the right time,” Gaccino said. “Being a part of that play really got us going and I’m proud of that.

“It meant so much to me and the rest of the seniors to win tonight,” Gaccino added. “We wanted to win not only for us but for our team and coaches and doing that was really incredible.”

Salles scored in the fourth quarter with 30 seconds left on a corner to finish the scoring.

Doing the job defensively were Keaveney, Horton, Warren, and Guss, who each had numerous huge steals, to get the Huskers out of their defensive end.

“Having my four defenders tackle the ball like they do before it gets to me just fills me with so much pride, because they proved how much they have worked to be on that field tonight,” said Durante, the Huskers’ goalkeeper. “I am so lucky to have those guys on my defensive end.”

Durante did her part as well by recording 3 saves.

“Since I only get this experience once with this team, it meant the world to record a shutout with them,” Durante said of registering a shutout on her senior night. “Seeing the defense constantly saving balls and my offense trying their hardest to succeed tonight was so inspiring for myself as well.”

Diaz said that winning for the ninth time in 12 games really reflects the hard work the team has been putting in at practices, getting there early, and hustling the whole time.

“Our coaches really push us to put 100 percent effort into everything we do, which makes us so much better as a whole,” Diaz said.

    That effort has been noticed.

“The team is definitely enjoying a successful season,” Hyndman said. “They have a huge work ethic and desire to get better and learn, which is huge.”

Durante (12 saves) and the trio of Adriana Torrieri, Warren, and Guss, who each had a defensive save, led the Huskers in their 3-0 loss to last year’s Section 1 Class B finalist, host Horace Greeley, tonight (Oct. 18).
