MILLBURN, NJ — Millburn High School (MHS) juniors Rusheel Mishra, Arin Kulkarni and Joey Dang are captains of the MHS Robotics team. According to Mishra, last summer they reached out to their French teacher, Deniz Atasagun, with a project proposal.

“She connected us with the nonprofit organization The Empathy Equality Entrepreneur Mission ( TEEEM ), which works with New Jersey high school students on global projects. TEEEM’s website describes their mission, “TEEEM has developed -- and continues to develop -- unique programs that provide our students with authentic educational value that extends far beyond the classroom.”

TEEM was founded by Atasagun as a way to connect high school students to francophone countries. It evolved into an organization that helps those nations.

“I really wanted to have a connection between my students and the French-speaking world,”

Mishra reported that Millburn High School has a history of collaborating with TEEEM on initiatives in Burkina Faso in Africa, so they were able to leverage these existing relationships.” The trio presented their idea to TEEEM in a Zoom meeting, and TEEEM introduced them to the GRACE School in Kenya which expressed strong interest in the project.

Mishra, Kulkarni and Dang have also volunteered with other STEM-related nonprofits in the past. “Over the summer, we realized the importance of sharing our experiences with students who might not otherwise have access to such resources and opportunities,” shared Mishra.
