    Football: Chasin’ Greatness Continues as Phillipsburg Shuts Out Union

    PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - It was a night of individual record chasing in Phillipsburg High School’s 44-0 whitewash of host Union in a Big Central Conference cross-division football game on Friday night as the Stateliners won for the sixth time in seven games this season.

    Senior wide receiver Matthew Scerbo Jr. caught touchdown passes of 87, 25, and 82 yards from quarterback and classmate Jett Genovese to get the last leg of his triple crown in career receiving at Phillipsburg.

    Scerbo Jr. finished the game with those three receptions for a career-high 194 yards. He now has 1,803 receiving yards, 22 touchdowns, and 107 receptions in his career, which are all school records.

    Meanwhile, Genovese was a perfect 6-for-6 for a career-high 255 yards with a career-high fourth passing TD going to senior Felix Matos for 55 yards on his only reception of the night. Matos also scored on a three-yard run for his eighth TD in the last two games.

    Genovese now has 39 career TD passes to tie Jack Stagaard for the most in school history and his 231 completions move him into second place all-time in that category. He also moved into third place all-time in passing yards with 3,794.

    Junior running back Sam Dech rushed twice for 72 yards, including a 75-yard run to paydirt after losing three yards on his only other carry. Phillipsburg recorded its first safety of the season when senior Jah’lil Dooley came up with a sack in the end zone.

    Dooley finished with two sacks while junior Brody Lee and sophomore Elijah Montgomery recorded their first career sacks. Senior linebacker Jayden Lucas once against led P’burg is tackles with 7 followed by Matos and Dech with four each.

    Junior placekicker Alexie Moreira knocked home all six of his extra point attempts and is now 36-for-36 for the season. P’burg’s defense held the Farmers to 148 yards in 44 plays, while the Stateliners gained 422 yards from scrimmage in 27 plays.

    Phillipsburg closes its regular season at Bridgewater-Raritan (3-4) on Friday before the state playoffs begin the following week. Union fell to 1-7 on the season.
