TARBORO — Six eastern North Carolina community colleges will converge in Tarboro today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a career fair aimed at hiring faculty and staff positions.

Representatives from Edgecombe Community College, Nash Community College, Halifax Community College, Martin Community College. Roanoke-Chowan Community College and the College of The Albemarle will attend the Regional Career Fair at Edgecombe CC's Center for Innovation, 2009 W. Wilson St., Tarboro.

Kimberly Lassiter, executive director of human resources at Roanoke-Chowan CC in Ahoskie, said the Innovation Center offers the necessary space for onsite interviews and to stage marketing materials for all six institutions. Organizers have cast a wide net for applicants in North Carolina and southern Virginia, Lassiter said.

"Our school has quite a few people that travel," Lassiter said. "We do have several people that live in southwest Virginia and drive here to Roanoke-Chowan. We also equally have a lot of staff that live in Elizabeth City and drive here so within an hour's driving time, I think that's doable."

Right now Roanoke-Chowan CC has 18 vacant positions for faculty and staff brought on by typical end of term factors such as retirements or workers seeking a career change, Lassiter said.

Nash CC currently has 14-16 vacant positions and Edgecombe CC has eight, spokespeople for the colleges said.

Lassiter and Kenyon Askew, public information officer for Nash CC, said that on-site interviews will serve as brief screenings to vet out top applicants. From there potential hires will still have to interview at the colleges themselves.

Applicants are asked to bring an unofficial transcript and resumé to the hiring fair. Lassiter said that applicants can register their materials ahead of time online .
