The History of Taylor County Chapter 453 Home of Sentinel Purchased
A. C. Shaw, son of Alexander and Mary Moon Shaw of Grafton, reputed to be the largest railroad conductor in the world, died at Garrett, Indiana, September 18, 1914, and his remains were returned to Grafton for interment in the family plot in Bluemont Cemetery. Bob Shaw, as he was known to his boyhood friends, left Grafton in the early years and began his railroad career on the Baltimore and Ohio between Garrett County and Chicago. On account of his great size, he never took advantage of the seniority rule, being too large to pass through the regulation passenger coach. Although he weighed 360 pounds, he was very active and when he starting his train, he preferred to swing aboard while the train was in motion, rather than board while the train was at a standstill. Those who will recall Bob Shaw as a boy in Grafton remember his affability and pleasing appearance and we’re sorry to hear of his passing. Like all towns and villages who boast of their fat boy, Grafton certainly had its fat boy in the person of Fatty Shaw in the early years of the town.
