CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The spread of West Nile Virus continues as two county health departments say they found batches of mosquitoes infected by the virus.

In Christian County, officials reported a positive test of mosquitoes with West Nile Virus on Monday in north Taylorville. Macon County officials announced Thursday a mosquito batch that their Mosquito Abatement District tested also came back positive.

Other Central Illinois counties who have previously tested positive include Morgan, Douglas and Champaign Counties.

Health officials recommend anyone venturing outside to wear long sleeves and pants and mosquito repellent to protect from mosquito bites, which could lead to WNV.

“During this time of year, dawn and dusk are the times people like to be outdoors to beat the heat.” Dr. Chad Anderson, the Public Health administrator for Christian County, said. “This is the time of day mosquitoes are most active. If you are going to be outside during these times, use EPA-registered mosquito repellent to protect yourself.”

The American Mosquito Control Association has compiled more recommendations to prevent the spread of mosquitos and protect people from mosquito bites.

The Illinois Department of Public Health tracks all cases of West Nile Virus in the state on their website. They have not reported any positive cases in humans.

Health officials also ask residents to report any dead bird to the local health department to test for WNV. For general questions on West Nile Virus, any Christian County resident can call 217-824-4113. Macon County residents should call (217) 875-2722 to report standing water and 217) 423-6988 ext. 1134 to report any suspicious dead birds.
