JENSEN BEACH - The high school football game between Fort Pierce Westwood and Jensen Beach High was postponed in the second quarter because of a medical emergency on the Westwood sideline.

With 4 minutes, 24 seconds left in the second quarter, a Westwood player needed medical attention. An ice tub was created for the player before he was taken away by ambulance.

Originally, the teams were going to take halftime and resume the second quarter and into the second half but it was later determined the game would be canceled. It will be ruled a forfeit by Westwood.

“It’s an official forfeit on their end because they had some medical issues,” Jensen Beach coach Tim Caffey said. “We were already winning by a good amount.”

Playing their first home game of the season, Jensen Beach held a 35-7 lead at the time the game was stopped.

“I’m just worried about my kids right now,” Westwood coach Chris Kokell said. “Caffey’s got a great team, and we stink right now. I’m just trying to make sure everything is ok right now.”

More than just the original one Westwood player was taken away by ambulance afterwards.

“I feel sorry for Coach Kokell,” Caffey said. “He’s dealing with something more important than football right now. He had two or three kids going to the hospital.”

The Falcons broke a 7-all tie with 28 straight points.

Jensen Beach (3-0) broke the deadlock with two scoring passes from Jonathan Ahern to Tristin Taylor covering 56 and 27 yards.

Jaylen Webley opened the scoring with a 32-yard interception return for Jensen Beach.

“Jonny Ahern had a great game,” Caffey said. “The receivers, Tristian had a great game. Johnny Delancy had a great game. Webley started us off. It was a matter of us imposing our will. We matched big plays.”

Dominic Lucci had a short rushing touchdown in the second quarter, and Ahern threw his third touchdown of the night to Johnny Delancy.

“Our kids played hard,” Caffey said. “They hit us with a big play but we just kept going and going.”

Westwood’s touchdown came on a 56-yard pass from Joseph “EJ” Weathers to Jabari Monds, who had 113 receiving yards in the first quarter and 125 in less than two quarters.

“Hats off to their kids; they played extremely hard,” Caffey said. “That No. 3 (Traveon Townsend), the first kid that passed out, that kid played his tail off. He does everything for them. I hope he’s doing well and his family is doing ok.

“It’s just one of those things that’s unfortunate. Would I have liked to finish the game? Absolutely. At this particular point in time, it’s bigger than the game. We were just fortunate we were up at the time.

Jensen Beach has won seven straight against Westwood and leads the series  7-5 that dates back to 2006.

The Falcons are home 7 p.m. Friday against Sebastian River in a Class 4A-District 13 game.

The Panthers (0-2) are home against Martin County on Friday at Lawnwood Stadium in a 5A-13 game.

The common denominator is the children were all exposed to the same elements. Heat! Why did one team suffer from the heat only? Maybe the opponent was better prepared. ???? And better coaching watching out for the kids to be hydrated during the course of the game. Maybe a learning experience
