Connect with conservation at family night
Farm families are invited to for an evening of learning about conservation near Hartford, South Dakota 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 16. Family, Farming, and The Future is an event hosted by the Minnehaha Conservation District and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service at the Dewey Gevik Outdoor Learning Center, 26583 462nd Ave. near Hartford.
Dakotafest Woman Farmer-Rancher of the Year nominees named
Five South Dakota farm and ranch women have been named finalists for the Dakotafest Woman Farmer-Rancher of the Year Award. They are Stacy Watembach of Alexandria, Sara Easton of Parkston, Kendra Olson of White Lake, Erin Yost of Wessington Springs, and Barbara Powell of Platte. These five women will be recognized during the awards ceremony as part of the Women in Ag Event, the morning of Aug. 22, at the Dakotafest grounds in Mitchell.

South Dakota athletes compete in U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials
While the Olympics are still a few weeks away, many athletes’ dreams are being tested right now at trial competitions. That includes several swimmers with South Dakota ties. Over 22,000 fans put their voices together to cheer on friends, competitors and family members. Although this giant arena usually hosts NFL games, football was not being played.
New federal funds earmarked for SD rural water projects
Some rural South Dakotans struggle to get good drinking water but the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has awarded two local communities with grants to help change it. Nearly $13 million in WaterSMART Drought Resiliency grants are slated for projects in Eagle Butte and Day County. The Mni Wašte Water Company, run by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, will receive $2.8 million to pipe water 10 miles northwest of the community to supply 17 existing residences and 20 being constructed.
MVPCS and Brandon Valley get road wins in Legion Baseball
MADISON and BOX ELDER, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -The Padres of MVPCS traveled to Flynn Field in Madison Tuesday night and jumped out to an early lead en route to an 11-6 victory. Daniel Laufman had 2 RBI’s with a bases-loaded hit. Tyson Wentland had 3 RBI’s. Jovi Wolf had 3 RBI’s for Madison which fells to 8-3. It was the 2nd win of the summer for Mount Vernon-Plankinton-Corsica-Stickney.
