The Teague Board of Alderman approved a variance during the regular meeting Monday night, Aug. 19, allowing a resident to build a small house on her propearty.

The applicable ordinance reads: “Dwellings shall contain not less than 1,200 square feet of enclosed floor area, exclusive of garages, carports, terraces, and similar areas.” Shanna Lord reported her structure will be between 750 and1,000 square feet.

The board approved the variance, setting a minimum of 700 square feet.

Holly Dunn addressed the board concerning a pastdue water bill from May 2024 for $97.33. Dunn reported paying the bill with cash, but does not have a receipt from the payment. Dunn noted that when she called the city she was told that she had paid the bill on June 10 using cash. However, there is now no record of the payment. The board tabled the matter until more research can be done.

The board also approved the 2024/2025 Teague Economic Development Corporation budget as well as the Teague EDC 2022/2023 audit report.

Teague EDC President Stephanie Burns noted there is a vape shop coming to Teague in the old Subway building.

There is a hold on the Teague Business Park located on Highway 84, west of Teague. In order for businesses to be built, there must be road work, including a turning lane, completed by TxDOT. The project will cost a lot of money. Discussions between the City of Teague, Teague EDC, and TxDOT are taking place to see what all will have to be done in order for the Teague Business Park to happen.

At the beginning of the meeting Chad Williams with CRW Contractors asked about the renewing of their mowing contract, which will be up in about 45 days. Teague Mayor James Monks responded that the contract says a decision has to be made within the final 10 days of the contract.

Leigh Fergsuon with Republic Services also addressed the Board of Aldermen about the recycling and waste solution company she works for and all that it has to offer for the City of Teague. Republic Services contracted with the previous city that Teague City Secretary Gay Pranger worked for.

After an executive session at the end of the meeting, the board declined an offer regarding the purchase, exchange, lease, or value of real property for 103 Wildflower. The board referred the matter to the city’s attorney to look into. No other details were available on the matter.
