Turnout drops in recent election
Voter turnout in the midterm elections again dropped statewide, with just over 45% of registered voters either casting ballots early or at the polls on Nov. 8. Republican candidates continued to hold a hammerlock on statewide positions, with incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott handily winning a third term over challenger Beto O’ Rourke. TISD honors Veterans

After several years of planning, negotiating, purchasing, and preparing by the Economic Development Corporation of Teague, Inc. (EDC), the Teague Business Park has become a reality. Several parcels of adjoining land were purchased and combined into one 30–acre tract to provide a good location for potential businesses. Freestone County Commissioners Court approved moving the office of Justice of the Peace 4 to Teague to share the space with the office of Justice of the Peace 2, despite objections from both Justices of the Peace 2 and 4. Freestone County stood aligned with the rest of the state election night by voting in a slate of Republican candidates, from state and federal offices all the way down to local seats. Voter turnout stood at 53.04 percent for Freestone County by the close of polls at 7 p.m., with 6,762 votes cast out of 12,249 registered voters. There were no contested local elections on the ballot, as all 10 county officials ran unopposed after winning contested Republican primary races in the spring. County avoids storm damage
Freestone County did not have any significant storm damage last Friday despite having a tornado warning. The tornado warning was issued last Friday afternoon after a tornado was spotted south of Groesbeck at approximately 5 p.m. The tornado was reportedly moving northeast at 40 mph, but it did not cause significant damage to Freestone County, according to Leonard Smith of the Freestone County Office of Emergency Management.
Celebrate Vets Day by honoring soldiers’ sacrifice
Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11. It is an opportunity to recognize all who served in the United States Armed Forces, said Commander Roger Brooke, of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5872 in Fairfield. “It’s to honor the veterans who have served,” Brooke said. “It’s different from Memorial Day because that’s for the ones who have already sacrificed all. Freestone County bridge closed for two weeks for replacement
Freestone County Commissioners made plans to quickly replace the bridge on County Road 510 after someone reported that one of the guard rails had fallen down. The Commissioner Court made that decision at their specially called meeting of Friday, Oct. 28, when they also agreed to take no action on the burn ban; and confirmed the county’s discretionary exemptions. Schrader celebrates 100th birthday
, Leon Schrader turned 100 years old on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022. On Saturday, Oct. 22, family and friends gathered at his home to celebrate with him. Schrader was also honored by the City of Teague and the Teague Chamber of Commerce. City of Teague Mayor David Huffman presented Schrader with a framed proclamation to celebrate his 100th birthday. Teague Chamber of Commerce President Debbie Sanoja presented Schrader with a certificate and a gold key to the City of Teague for all of his support and dedication to Teague. Leon Hugo Schrader was born on Oct. 20, 1922, in Bellville, and moved to Teague in the early 1940s. “He is described by others as being very humble, hardworking, and always willing to lend a helping hand,” Huffman said. Leon was the lifetime owner and operator of Leon’s Garage that was in business in Teague for 70 years. “As a loyal and caring businessman, customers knew that no matter the day or time it was that they could call Leon for help with their vehicles,” Huffman said. “Throughout the years, Leon has always been very supportive of the community and local organizations.”
Lions edge Groesbeck, look to seal playoff berth
