Fort Worth man dies in rollover on 45
FREESTONE COUNTY - A Fort Worth man is dead after a vehicle rollover on Interstate 45 Sunday evening. Harold Weathersby, 50, died from injuries sustained from the accident. As a result, northbound traffic on I-45 was stalled while crews cleaned up the scene. At 7:07 p.m. Sunday, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to the crash on northbound I-45 near mile marker 184, north of Buffalo. A Ford Expedition failed to drive in its lane and sideswiped a Ford Mustang. After the initial contact, the Expedition left the roadway and overturned. The driver of the Expedition, Weathersby, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the next of kin were notified. The passenger of the Expedition was transported to Freestone Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries have been reported. “Stay focused. You have a lot of things to think about when you’re behind the wheel, such as road conditions, your speed and position, traffic signs, and road markings. Look out for the cars around you, and always stay focused on driving. This is a critical step in practicing safe driving,” a DPS statement said.
Commissioners raise dispatchers’ salaries
Freestone County Commissioners raised the salaries of county dispatchers in response to their request, expressed at the previous Commissioners Court meeting. The decision was made at the court’s May 17 meeting, when commissioners also discussed whether Teague and Wortham have decided to join in the consolidated dispatch, discussed whether to accept tax abatements or PILOT programs from solar farms, approved allowing former full-time employees to return to work without drug tests or background checks, and made other decisions about the county’s finances and well-being. Man arrested; narcotics found
On Sunday evening, May 21, Freestone County Sheriff Office Deputies went to a residence on County Road 930 in an attempt to apprehend a male subject who had an active parole warrant for his arrest. On arrival, deputies made contact with the wanted subject and took him into custody. While on scene, during the arrest, evidence was observed that further led the deputies to a narcotics investigation and obtaining a search warrant. Deputies executed the search warrant which yielded more than 250 grams of methamphetamine, a loaded handgun, and $3,512 seized in cash. The male subject was arrested and booked into the Freestone County Jail for the following charges: 1.) Possession Controlled Substance PG 1 more than 200 grams less than 400 grams (1st Degree Felony) 2.) Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon (3rd Degree Felony) 3.) Parole Warrant.
7-mile trek for fallen soldier Monday morning
Teague resident James Ryan Sartor gave the ultimate sacrifice - his life - during the War in Afghanistan in 2019. A 7-mile trek will take place on Monday - Memorial Day - in honor of him. The #7forsartor trek starts at 6:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Teague with Muster. The trek, which is a run/walk affair, begins at 7 a.m. and it ends at Veterans Park. Sartor, who was a Sgt. Major at the time of his death, graduated from Teague in 1997, and was a multi-sport athlete. Sartor’s family also received a Gold Star, one of the highest honors given to families of soldiers who are killed in action. The Gold Star was given to Sartor’s mother, Terri Pryor-Patterson, in March by Anthony Price, who rode his motorcycle cross country to deliver Gold Stars to numerous families from Orlando to San Diego, Calif.
Hempel laid to rest
, , , Groesbeck Fire-Rescue and Limestone Medical Center EMS has lost one of their own. Rick Hempel passed away on Tuesday, May 9. Hempel was a lieutenant with Groesbeck Fire and a paramedic for LMC EMS. Hempel was also a retired police officer after 28 years. Hempel’s passing is considered a Line of Duty Death. “Rick was an excellent paramedic with the Limestone Medical Center in addition to being a volunteer Groesbeck VFD lieutenant,” stated WLLVFD in a Facebook post. “Rick not only responded to calls on the ambulance but also on his time off as a volunteer.” A Celebration of Life service,...

, , , Teague Mayor David Huffman administered the oaths of office for Alderman Place II Jerry Ballew, Alderman Place VI Bridget Gauntt, and Alderman Place V Timothy Campbell at the City of Teague Board of Aldermen meeting on Monday night, May 15. All aldermen were present to begin the meeting except for Jamie West. Prior to administering the oaths of office to Campbell, Gauntt, and Ballew, the board declared the results official for the general election on May 6. Murder suspect caught in Freestone County
A Waco murder suspect was arrested in Freestone County last week. Ruben Villa Lee Dominguez, 17, was detained by US Marshals and Freestone County Sheriff’s Office Deputies on May 10. He is the prime suspect in murder of Tercquan Johnson, 17, also of Waco. On May 2, Waco Police Department officers were called to a shooting near the 1900 Block of JJ Flewellen Rd. in Waco. When officers arrived, they located one 17-yearold male with gunshot wounds, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was the seventh person murdered in Waco in 2023, and his death is the WPD’s sixth homicide investigation of the year. Dominguez has been extradited to the Mc-Lennan County Jail.

Jerry Ballew, Bridget Gauntt, and Timothy Campbell were elected to the City of Teague Board of Aldermen in the election on Saturday, May 6, by the citizens of Teague. TISD changes last day of school to May 19
Summer will come a little early for students at Teague ISD this year. The TISD school board approved changing the last day of school of the 2022-23 school year to Friday, May 19, at the TISD school board meeting on Tuesday evening, April 25. The original calendar had Thursday, May 25, as the last day of school. The district was able to make the change due to having enough hours that is required by TEA for a school year. Allen honored with Marine Tactical Unit bearing his name
, , , , , A DPS Trooper who was killed in the line of duty was honored Tuesday morning. The Texas Department of Public Safety held a dedication ceremony for a Marine Tactical Unit that was dedicated to the memory of Trooper Damon Allen. Allen, who served in a six-county region that included Freestone and Limestone counties, was killed in the line of duty on Nov. 23, 2017, a date that served as Thanksgiving Day that year. The dedication ceremony took place at Fairfield Lake State Park. The dedication was attended by members of Allen’s family, numerous DPS Troopers, and members of the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office and Fairfield EMS, to name a few. The ceremony featured speeches from DPS Deputy Director Dwight Mathis, DPS Major Ruben Galindo, and Public Safety Commissioner Larry Long. The DPS Honor Guard unveiled the plaque for the Trooper Damon Allen Marine Tactical Unit as well. Allen was commissioned as a DPS Trooper in July 2002, and was stationed in Groesbeck at the time of his death. He was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 45 just south of the Fairfield city limit on Nov. 23, 2017.

, , Dax Linscomb won the discus for the third meet in a row last Friday at the Region III-3A track and field meet at Midway High School in Waco. Linscomb’s throw of 154 feet, 9 inches clinched the Teague senior’s first trip to the state meet. The top two finishers and top third place finish per event in the region meet qualify for state.
