County contracts with company to monitor 911 comm tower
, , Freestone County commissioners took action to have the 911 communications tower monitored full time so it will not lose power again, as happened twice recently. The court made that decision at its April 19 meeting, when the commissioners also discussed tax abatement policies for solar companies; accepted a state grant for a victims coordinator and liaison position with the county’s Office; and made other decisions concerning the county’s finances and well-being. Longtime board member recognized
Since its inception in 1952, Don Stirton has been a part of Freestone County Farm Bureau. “There were times when the Freestone County Farm Bureau in its infancy couldn’t pay its bills and he would help,” Freestone County Farm Bureau Agency Manager Beau Chastain said. “Don helped us become who we are.” Stirton, a longtime trustee of Freestone County Farm Bureau, recently stepped down after several decades of service. He was recognized at this month’s board meeting on April 11. During his time on the board, Stirton served as president and director. He’s also involved with the Freestone Community Center. “Don’s done a lot in the community that very few people know about,” Chastain said. “He’s also active in his church and community center.” Stirton and his wife, Charlsie, reside on a ranch in Freestone. “He’s like family to us and we didn’t want him to leave the board without some type of honor,” Chastain said.

The Teague Lady Lions continued their quest toward a district championship last week with a pair of lopsided victories. Teague (22-7-1, 12-0 in District 20-3A) blanked Buffalo, 7-0, and blasted past Westwood, 16-1. The Lady Lions had an opportunity to wrap up the 20-3A crown Tuesday when they hosted Franklin. Freestone County officials appear to have found a way to be notified if the communications tower loses electric power, which happened twice recently. County to have 2 city, 2 school district races
A pair of cities and two school districts will have elections for board, aldermen or mayor positions. Fairfield and Wortham ISDs, and the cities of Teague and Wortham all have contested elections on their ballots. Election Day is May 6. Wortham ISD has Places 5, 6 and 7 up for election, albeit only one of those places will be contested. County works to fix tower outage
, One of Freestone County’s two communications towers lost its electric power, switched to backup power then shut off completely Tuesday, April 4, when the propane used to power the backup system ran out. The county did not realize the power to the tower was off until the outage occurred. Consequently, an agenda item was added to the regular commissioners court’s April 5 meeting to discuss this and other problems concerning the jail, communications and dispatch. Juror cash pay going well, according to county treasurer
, Freestone Country Treasurer Jeannie Keeney reported that paying jurors in cash rather than checks has gone well with those showing up for jury duty. Cuevas goes yard twice in Lady Lions’ victory over Mexia
Teague scored 14 runs in the top of the fourth inning and pounded out a 20-2 victory at Mexia on Monday in a game that was stopped after four innings due to the 15-run mercy rule. The victory kept the Lady Lions in first place in District 20-3A with an unblemished 10-0 record. Mexia remained winless in 10 district games. Two dead in head-on collision
FREESTONE COUNTY - A Streetman woman and a Centerville man are dead from injuries sustained in a head-on collision Monday afternoon. Ashley Clark, 38, of Streetman, and Dustin George, 40, of Centerville, were killed after the Mitsubishi sedan they were traveling in collided with a Jeep on U.S. 84 near the intersection of FM 2777 in western Freestone County. The occupants of the Jeep were transported to area hospitals and treated for non-life threatening injuries. On Monday at approximately 12:33 p.m., Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to the crash just northwest of Teague. The Mitsubishi passenger car was traveling eastbound and drove onto the wrong side of the roadway and crashed into the Jeep, causing both vehicles to become engulfed in flames. The driver of the Mitsubishi, Clark, and the passenger George, were pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been notified. The investigation is active and ongoing. The DPS reminds drivers to “Call 911 immediately to report wrong-way drivers. If you see a wrong-way driver approaching, immediately reduce your speed and pull off the roadway.”

TISD looking at adding classrooms at TES
, Teague ISD is looking at adding on an additional wing of classrooms to Teague Elementary as there is a need for more classrooms. Architects are working on plans for the expansion and it looks like the project will cost approximately $4.7 million. There are no final plans at this time. The board is looking at what to do with fourth grade students this upcoming school year. The district can lease portable buildings for $165,000 where students can be in their own classrooms.
