TISD begins 23-24 school year Aug 24
The Teague ISD school board approved the 2023-24 school calendar at their meeting on Tuesday March 28. Students will get a little longer summer this year as the first day of school for Teague ISD is August 16 for the 2023-24 school year. Faculty and staff members will return on Aug. 9 for five days of staff development before the first day of school. Monday, Sept. 4, is Labor Day and a school holiday. County applying for 2 historical designations for courthouse
, Freestone County Commissioners heard an update Monday on applications for historical designations for the courthouse. That happened at the Commissioners Court’s meeting, when the commissioners also witnessed the county treasurer open bids from banks on becoming the county depository for County and District Clerk funds; and approved the purchase of a new dump truck for Precinct 2. The Teague Lions survived a wild 12-10 finish at Westwood for their first win in District 20-3A play on March 21. Teague (2-8, 1-3 in 203A) also overcame 11 errors. The Lions scored two runs each in the first, second and fourth innings before adding one in the fifth and five in the sixth to build a 12-3 lead. Commissioners approve Fairfield Ambulance price
Freestone County Commissioners Court took a step forward in getting a new ambulance for the Fairfield Ambulance Service. The commissioners made this decision at their regularly scheduled meeting on March 15, when they also accepted a grant to pay for the Emergency Notification Service, accepted a copy of the subdivision regulations to study it for needed changes and took no action to initiate a burn ban, which remains on the agenda year round. Man arrested in Teague on 15 charges
On Friday, March 17, shortly after 5 p.m., the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office conducted an arrest and initiated a search warrant west of Teague based on an aggravated assault with a firearm complaint and a felon in possession of a firearm. FCSO Sgt. Weinmann; Deputies Darby, Fogle, McAdams and Dollar; and members of the Wortham Police Department initiated contact with the male suspect upon arriving at the location. Lady Lions remain unbeaten in district
, Last week was different for the Teague softball team. For starters, Teague ISD was on spring break, which meant no classes. The other factor was the Lady Lions played two games in two days - less than 24 hours apart. Nonetheless, Teague (14-7-1, 4-0 in District 20-3A) prevailed in both of its contests. The Teague Lions varsity boys track and field team won the Fairfield Invitational Relays for the second consecutive year last Thursday. VARSITY BOYS The Teague Varsity boys won the Fairifeld meet with 142 points ahead of Westwood (111), Groesbeck (95), Kerens (86), Fairfield (82), Elkhart (48) and Buffalo (40). The City of Teague board of aldermen met on Monday evening, March 13, in the their shortest meeting they have had over the past several months. Alderman Place 1 Garlan Steed and Alderman Place 5 Ryan Mathison were not present at the meeting. TPWD reopens Fairfield Lake State Park
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) announced on Monday that it would temporarily reopen Fairfield Lake State Park for free day-use-only visitation beginning Tuesday, March 14. On Feb. 13, TPWD was given 120 days’ notice to vacate the property before it is turned over to the contracted buyer. TPWD closed the park on Feb. 28 to begin preparations for decommissioning the park. Staff have already begun decommissioning the park but developed a plan for its temporary reopening after a Thursday meeting of the House Committee on Culture, Recreation & Tourism. TISD approves new band uniforms
, The Teague Lion Marching Band will be looking spiffy for the 2023-2024 school year as the TISD school board approved purchasing 100 new band uniforms totaling $47,555 at the Feb. 28 TISD school board meeting. Habitual offender gets 99 years
On Feb. 28, a Limestone County jury convicted Colbin John Wright on two felony charges. The jury sentenced Wright to 99 years in prison for evading arrest/detention in a vehicle and 15 years for felony theft. County Attorney Roy DeFriend and Assistant County Attorney Jeff Janes presented evidence from several law enforcement agencies involved in Wright’s case. , Representatives of a company called Solar Proponent made a presentation about a project called Tehuacana Solar to Freestone County Commissioners at their March 1 meeting. Duo headed to state powerlifting meet
Ty’ariah Mims is headed to the State Powerlifting Meet on March 16 in Frisco to represent the Teague Lady Lions. Mims placed second in the Region III3A Powerlifting Meet at Eustace High School last Friday. Mims had a squat of 350 pounds, a bench press of 170 pounds, and a deadlift of 305 pounds for the second place finish in the 259 division. Cuevas also medaled and brought home a third place finish in the 198 class after a squat of 290 pounds, a bench press of 160 pounds, and a deadlift of 320 pounds.
