The Lions lost a 58-53 decision at home against Fairfield on Jan. 17, before bouncing back to claim a 58-55 affair at Westwood last Friday. County couples choose altar over divorce
Freestone County couples chose to tie the knot at almost twice the rate of those who filed for divorce during the second half of 2022, a trend that continues from years past. During the 1990s and 2000s, the yearly tally tended to tie or trend slightly towards more divorces filings. For the first half of the year, marriages outpaced divorces as well. Marriage license applications at the Freestone County Clerk’s office totaled 67 for July through December, while divorce filings at the Freestone County District Clerk’s office totaled 35 for the same time period. September and October saw the highest number of marriage license applications, at 14 each, while July and August saw the second highest, at 10 each. In November, couples filed 11 applications to marry, and eight in December. Divorce filings were most numerous in July and November, at nine and seven respectively, followed by September with six, and October and August with four. During the last half of 2021, marriage license applications stood at 50, and divorce filings at 36.
Commitment runs deep in Beaver-Mullen family tree
, Reaching the 50-year milestone in a marriage is a rarity. One Freestone County couple comes from a lineage of half-century marriages. Clois “Buddy” and Charlotte Ruth (Beaver) Mullen celebrated their 64th year of marriage on Nov. 22, and both sets of their parents were married 60-plus years as well. Buddy’s parents — Clint and Lucy (Moore) Mullen — were married for 62 years before Clint passed away in 1984. City of Teague has no city secretary or administrator
, , , , Following a four-hour City of Teague board of aldermen meeting on Monday night, the City was left without a City Secretary and a City Administrator. The two positions have no set salary and no job description at this time. , Freestone County Commissioners Court has agreed to abandon .8 miles of County Road 131, which is in Precinct 1. The commissioners made this decision at their Jan. 4 meeting, when they also left the burn ban lifted and accepted a donation for the Sheriff’s Office. As for the proposal to abandon the northern end of County Road 131, County Judge Linda Grant noted that one individual owns the property on both sides of the road as well as the northern end point.
