The Beatles once had a hit single called, “With a little help from my friends.”

In the case of the Teague girls basketball team, the Lady Lions got a lot of help from six of their seven District 20-3A members. Needing a win and a Groesbeck loss to Franklin, Teague (17-15, 6-8 in 20-3A) had both of those things happen Tuesday night.

As a result of the Lady Lions’ 39-14 victory against Elkhart and Franklin’s 63-18 rout of Groesbeck, Teague clinched the fourthplace playoff spot. The Lady Lions were involved in a three-way tie with Elkhart and Groesbeck going into Tuesday’s regular season finale.

In the process, Teague also snapped a three-game losing streak and overcame a slew of adversity to reach the playoffs. The Lady Lions lost point guard Jolee Haley for the season with a knee injury in December, and also had to overcome being swept by Groesbeck.

The Lady Goats did themselves no favors after beginning the district race with a 4-2 record. Groesbeck self-destructed with losses in seven of its final eight games with the only win being against Teague two weeks ago.

The Lady Lions will face either Lorena or Little River Academy in the bi-district round of the Class 3A state playoffs Monday or Tuesday at a time, date and site to be determined. Statistics from Tuesday’s game were not available at press time.

    MEXIA 48, TEAGUE 27

Teague spotted Mexia 10 points at the outset and never recovered in a 48-27 loss to the Ladycats in a District 20-3A girls basketball game at the Mexia High School gym Friday night, Feb. 2.

Against Mexia, the Lady Lions did not score for more than four and a half minutes to start the game. By the time Bethanah Owens made a free throw to get Teague on the board with 3 minutes, 17 seconds left in the first quarter, Mexia held a 10-0 lead.

Owens scored inside 16 seconds later and was fouled. She completed the three-point play and Teague was within 10-4 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

However, after Owens’ basket the Lady Lions went 13 1/2 minutes without a field goal. Their next basket came with 5:38 left in the third quarter on a layup by A’Shaiya Jones to make the score 28-10.

Mexia finished the first quarter on an 8-1 run and led 18-5 at the break. Teague managed just one free throw in the second quarter while Mexia scored nine points and led 27-6 at halftime.

The teams played to a 21-21 draw in the second half.

Baskets were hard to come by throughout the game for Teague, which finished with just eight field goals. Three of those came in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach. Owen had five field goals and scored 15 of her team’s 27 points.

A’Shaiya Jones scored seven points. Payton Bond had three points. Adyson Beaird and E’liyah Roblow had one point each to round out Teague’s scoring.

Mycah Miller led Mexia with a game-high 16 points. Damyia Bledsoe added nine points. Deyonna Davis scored seven points.

Cherish Spivey notched five points and Mariah Hall netted four points.

Gwendolyn Johnson had three points. Haylee Fitch and Mackenzie Harris had two points each to round out Mexia’s scoring.
