Lady Lions run-rule Groesbeck in district opener

It didn’t take long for the Teague Lady Lions to establish momentum Tuesday night.

Just five pitches to be exact. Teague recorded two runs off of a pair of singles and a triple during the game’s first five pitches and coasted from there in a 13-3 victory at Groesbeck.

The game, which was the District 20-3A opener for both teams, concluded after five innings because of the 10-run rule. The first five pitches hardly do justice on what happened in the fateful top of the first inning.

The Lady Lions went on to add four more runs in the frame to build a 6-0 lead before Groesbeck (85-1, 0-1 in 20-3A) took its first at-bat. In fact, Teague (10-6, 1-0 in 20-3A) sent all nine of its batters to the plate, albeit leadoff hitter Keely Mathis went to the plate twice, during the first inning.

It was Mathis who started things off by sending the first pitch past the infield for a leadoff single. Laynie Morrow followed three pitches later with a triple that sent Mathis across the plate for the first run of the game, and Kaylee Cuevas sent Morrow home with a single on the very next pitch.

Cuevas later scored on a passed ball prior to Cate Satterwhite’s two-run triple that increased the lead to 5-0. Two batters later, Audrey Cearley sent Satterwhite home with a single to make it 6-0.

The Lady Lions struck again with two runs in the third to make it 8-0. Andrea James hit an RBI triple and Satterwhite recorded a sacrifice fly to send James home.

Teague added three more runs in the fourth to increase its lead to 11-0. Cuevas hit a two-run triple and Korree Riskin hit an RBI single.

The Lady Goats added two runs in the bottom of the fourth off of a single and two errors to make it 11-2, but the Lady Lions responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Cuevas hit an inside-the-park homerun and Kylee Silar drew a bases-loaded walk to send Reese Stacks home.

Groesbeck scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough to extend the game. Cuevas dominated in the pitcher’s circile with 14 strikeouts.

Cuevas (3-4, 3B, HR, 4 RBI), James (3-3, BB, 3B, RBI) and Morrow (3-4, 3B, RBI) led Teague at the plate. Cearley (1-2, RBI), Riskin (1-1, 3 BB, RBI), Satterwhite (1-2, SAC, 3B, 3 RBI) and Stacks (1-4, 2B) also contributed.

The Lady Lions host Fairfield at 6 p.m. Friday before taking a two-game road trip next week. Teague will visit Mexia at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Buffalo at 6 p.m. Thursday.
