Four Teague ISD students were honored at the Teague ISD Students of the Year for 2023-2024 on Thursday evening, May 9, in a small banquet hosted by the Teague Chamber of Commerce at the Teague Hotel.

Earning the honor were Xi’Kih McGregor - Teague Elementary School, Reese Fleming - Teague Junior High, Omar Perez - Teague High School, and Bo Self - Teague Lion Academy.

Fourth grader Xi’Kih McGregor was named the Teague Elementary School Student of the Year.

Xi’Kih plays basketball and softball. She also loves to make bracelets.

When asked what she was looking forward to the most next year in junior high, Xi’Kih said, “I can’t wait to make more achievements and be involved in various activities.”

McGregor is the daughter of Shadee Brackens.

“TES chose Xi’kih as student of the year because she exhibits a multitude of characteristics teachers admire about their students. Not only is she an extremely hard worker and rule follower, but she always does what is expected and more,” TES Principal Crystal Adams said. “She is quiet, but she has an incredibly sweet personality and is kind to everyone. Even though she is one of the highest math students, she is not afraid to ask questions. She always participates in class and is not afraid to take risks. She is a role model student on all levels. We are extremely proud of her and have loved having her at TES.”

Eighth grader Reese Fleming was named the Teague Junior High Student of the Year.

She’s active in Student Council, National Junior Honor Society, UIL academics, and cheer.

“I am looking forward to being a cheerleader in high school and making memories with my friends throughout high school,” Fleming said. “I hope to go to Texas A&M University after I graduate high school.”

Fleming is the daughter of Brandon and Staci Fleming.

“Reese is an outstanding student who is eager to help others, both students and teachers alike,” TJH Principal Josh Ingram said. “Moving into high school she plans to work her way into the cosmetology program to help her through college when she graduates. One of my favorite things is that she always greets you with a smile and a positive attitude.”

Senior Omar Perez was named the Teague High School Student of the Year.

At THS, Perez has served as a Drum Major and is involved in the National Honor Society, Student Council, UIL, Jazz Band, and plays tennis as well.

Perez serves as the NHS Vice President, Student Council Reporter, and is on the Leadership Team in band. He was also crowned Mr. THS this school year.

Perez plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin this fall to major in Journalism.

Perez is the son of Catalina Perez.

Senior Bo Self was named the Tegaue Lion Academy Student of the Year.

Self completed his junior and senior year by November and then got a full-time job at Woodson’s in Mexia. In January, he started two courses at TSTC, but learned that the traditional college setting was not for him.

Self is graduating at the age of 16. He plans to go to Arkansas this fall to get certified in heavy equipment.

“I have watched this kid turn down a job to be trained to run a multi-million dollar business. I trust that he knows the correct path for him,” Teague Lion Academy Principal Ginger Self said. “As a principal, I admire that he does not let the worldly things influence him. He makes decisions based on what his heart tells him is right. I have enjoyed watching him mature during this year at Lion Academy.”

Self is the son of David and Ginger Self.
