    City names July 13 Ryan Sartor Day

    The City of Teague is honoring a hero on Saturday.

    Mayor James Monks signed a proclamation naming July 13 “Ryan Sartor Day.”

    Sartor, a Teague native and Teague High School graduate, was an 18-year Army Veteran who was killed in the line of duty on July 13, 2019.

    Sartor was a Major Sergeant in A Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in the U.S. Army.

    He was stationed in Ft. Collins, Colorado and made the ultimate sacrifice in Faryab Province, Afghanistan five years ago.

    Sartor joined the Army in June 2001 and began his Military journey as an infantryman in the 3rd Infantry Division. He was in the invasion of Iraq, and was selected for the Special Forces Qualification Course upon completion of his tour.

    Sartor earned his Green Beret from there and was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in the U.S. Army in Ft. Collins. During his 14-year tenure at Ft. Collins, he had numerous deployments.

    Sartor answered the call to go to Iraq four more times (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010-11), Germany and Israel (both 2008), the African continent (2012, 2013) and Afghanistan (2017, 2019). His awards include the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster and the National Defense Service Medal.

    Posthumously, Sartor was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He also earned a Special Forces Tab and Ranger Tab.

    Sartor graduated from Teague High School in 1997. He left behind a wife and three children.
