Depressive disorders (DDs) are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).1 In the United States, those with DDs are 3 times more likely to develop CVD than those without DDs, and CVD develops on average 7.5 years earlier than those without major depressive disorder (MDD).2 Although the cause-and-effect relationship between these 2 diseases is poorly understood, it is believed to be multifactorial and bidirectional. The lifetime prevalence of MDD in the US is 20.6% and continues to increase,3 making DDs a significant modifiable CVD risk factor that must be addressed. Screening and early treatment of DDs are just as important in preventing CVD as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and smoking.
