    UPDATE: MCSO has identified a person of interest in death of Oklahoma cowboy

    MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- UPDATED: MCSO has identified the person of interest in connection with this case. No additional tips are needed and the investigation is ongoing.


    As the Midland County Sheriff’s Office continues its Mother’s Day homicide investigation that left an Oklahoma cowboy dead, detectives are asking for help from the community to identify the man in a white Ford Expedition that could have valuable information.

    Between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on May 12, MCSO deputies were called to the 10400 block of W Interstate 20 in reference to a medical call. At the scene, investigators found 26-year-old Austin Winn dead from a gunshot wound.

    Winn’s family members the Tecumseh, Oklahoma native was hauling horses through West Texas when he was killed.

    “My brother had got off at I-20 (and) 1788 and he had just sent my mom a text telling her ‘Happy Mother’s Day’, he’d be home, you know, at 9:37 is when he sent that message to her. He had been on the phone with his girlfriend…talking to her, telling her the same thing and that he would see her…that night. The sheriff showed up to my parents between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. telling them that…my brother was found dead outside the truck,” said Winn’s sister, Ashlyn Winn Jones. “He had been to Presidio, and he always comes home and that’s an area (Midland) that he stops to get fuel on his way home. He runs that route anywhere from one to three times a week, that same route.”

    Now the family, and investigators are still searching for answers.

    MCSO said that further investigation revealed video footage of a white Ford Expedition in the area at the time of the incident. The subject observed operating the vehicle was also seen on video footage of a neighboring business: a male wearing a dark-colored cap, black Buccee’s hoodie, blue jeans and work boots.
