IUP Unveils State-of-the-Art $90 Million Science and Mathematics Building

    2023-11-03

Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) has opened the doors to its brand new science and mathematics building, the John J. and Char Kopchick Hall. This impressive facility, which comes with a price tag of $90 million, spans over 142,536 square feet and is set to become a hub of innovation and learning on the IUP campus.

The grand opening, which took place on Thursday, saw more than 400 attendees celebrating this significant milestone. While classes are yet to commence in the building, it is already equipped with 51,600 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratory space, overlooking IUP's picturesque Oak Grove.

Dr. John J. Kopchick, after whom the building is named, expressed his enthusiasm during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He emphasized the building's role in symbolizing a new beginning and its potential to inspire students. "The new building is and will be a tangible reminder of our goal: to inspire a lifelong passion for learning, and help our students become the best version of themselves, with integrity and responsibility," he remarked.

Kopchick Hall is set to house various departments, including natural science, mathematics, anthropology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, engineering, geography, geology, and environment, among others. The facility boasts 43 research lab modules, nearly 10,000 square feet of collaboration space, and 8,000 feet of teaching space. This new establishment will replace the Weyandt Hall, which has been a part of IUP since 1966.

Reflecting on the significance of this new addition to IUP, Dr. Kopchick stated, "We are deeply and profoundly proud to have our name 'etched' in the history of science at IUP. It is a spectacular, breathtaking, awesome, and humbling honor."
