On this National Purple Heart Day, August 7th, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart, a symbol of their courage, sacrifice, and resilience in the face of adversity. This prestigious medal is bestowed upon those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military.

Established by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, the award was later revived and renamed the Purple Heart in 1932 by Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur. Today, it is awarded exclusively for injuries sustained or deaths that occur in combat.

There is no exact number of Purple Hearts awarded, as consistent records weren’t kept when the award was re-established in 1932. However, it’s estimated that around 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded.

National Purple Heart Day is a time to reflect on the profound sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. It is also a day to honor the families who have provided unwavering support to their loved ones through times of war and hardship, sustaining them in their service.
