OMAHA, NE – United States Attorney Susan T. Lehr announced that Demitrius Alston, 34, of Omaha, Nebraska, was sentenced on August 14, 2024, in federal court for his involvement in a series of bank robberies, attempted robberies, and a conspiracy to commit interference with interstate commerce by robbery. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard handed down a sentence of 235 months in prison. In the federal system, there is no parole. After completing his prison term, Alston will be required to serve a three-year term of supervised release. The exact amount of restitution will be determined in a future hearing.

Alston was indicted in three separate criminal cases in 2020, marking the final sentencing in a conspiracy that targeted federally insured banks across Nebraska, South Dakota, North Carolina, and Iowa between 2015 and 2020. The first indictment charged Alston and four other defendants with conspiracy to commit interference with commerce by robbery, involving fifteen banks. The group, often disguised and masked, carried out "takeover" style robberies, where they brandished firearms to control employees and customers, giving them access to bank vaults. Between June 1, 2015, and June 22, 2018, the conspiracy led to the theft of $959,147.68 from these banks.

Alston was also indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina for the robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on July 29, 2019. This case was later transferred to the District of Nebraska. During this robbery, Alston and another accomplice executed a similar "takeover" style robbery, stealing over $77,000 and fleeing in a 1993 Chevy Lumina. Alston was later apprehended at the Fayetteville Regional Airport after TSA agents discovered large sums of cash in his bag during screening. Alston attempted to flee, dropping $38,110 in crisp bills, along with his Nebraska identification, cellphone, and boarding pass. A subsequent FBI search of his Nebraska home uncovered the title to the getaway car, linking him to the crime.

In the final indictment, returned by a grand jury in the District of Nebraska, Alston and a codefendant, Brealon Goodwin, were charged with the attempted robbery of a Metro Credit Union and the robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank in Omaha. On September 25, 2018, the pair attempted to rob the Metro Credit Union using disguises and a stolen red Jeep to flee. Three days later, on September 28, 2018, they successfully robbed the Wells Fargo Bank of over $16,000, again using disguises and implying they were armed.

Alston evaded arrest until September 27, 2021. During an interview with investigators, he admitted to participating in nearly two dozen robberies, including those for which he was charged. All targeted banks were federally insured.

Several related defendants received their sentences in 2022 and 2023. Brealon Goodwin was sentenced to 69 months in prison on each of three counts, to be served concurrently. Kevin Brown received a total of 128 months for two counts, Tristen Coleman received 100 months for two counts, and Charles Ware was sentenced to 170 months for two counts.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Omaha Police Department, and the Lincoln Police Department.
