Crawford County Football Rewind | Week 3

    By Zachary Holden, Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum,

BUCYRUS — What a week for Crawford County!

Five teams were in action — Crestline's game against Collinwood was canceled — and four came away with big wins, two the first W of the season. As expected, there were some phenomenal performances driving their teams.

Let's take a look at this week's Football Rewind:

    Best performance(s)

Two players delivered exactly the type of performance their team needed in Week 3.

Buckeye Central's Jack Phillips had himself a night in Fairport Harbor, guiding the Bucks to their first win of the season. The dynamic junior had a hand in all three touchdowns, throwing a 45-yard strike to Caydin Jarvis, scrambling from 25 yards out then connecting with his brother Alec on a 20-yard score. He also recorded an interception for an all-around performance.

Wynford's Brayden Campbell rushed in four touchdowns from three, one, three and one yard out as the Royals fended off Western Reserve for win No. 1 of the season. He had 11 carries for 41 yards.

    Other notable performances:

Buckeye Central's Corbin Bloomfield nabbed an interception, Dylan Heydinger and Madden Alt each recovered a fumble.

Bucyrus' Demaris Munn-Page had a 70-yard fumble return for the Redmen's lone touchdown of the game. He also carried the ball 14 times for 37 yards.

Colonel Crawford's Connor McMichael was dominant in the rushing attack, logging 11 carries for 108 yards and a trio of touchdowns along with catching three passes for 10 yards. Lucas Foy made the most of him lone catch of the night taking it 87 yards for the opening touchdown in the Eagles' big win.

Galion's Trevor Shifley was a menace on defense with five tackles and one sack, Jacob Chambers hauled in four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, Landon Prosser was a reception machine corralling eight for 68 yards, and quarterback Braxton Prosser was 16-for-25 passing with 174 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers stay perfect.

Wynford's Anthony Evans logged 28 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown as the bell cow in the backfield, Bryce Locker added 99 more on the ground on 10 attempts.

    Surprises

What better surprise is there than seeing the county go 4-1?! Wynford and Buckeye Central desperately needed wins from a morale standpoint, but also to show these new faces they're capable of competing and coming out on top. The Royals avenged a thrilling loss at Western Reserve last year with a 33-22 victory, and the Bucks traveled faaaaaar from home and took down Fairport Harding 21-14.

It was also surprising to hear Crestline wouldn't get a chance to suit up in Week 3 after Collinwood canceled Friday morning. The Bulldogs were primed for a bounce-back game after a Week 2 loss, but getting a week of rest isn't the worst thing to ensure players stay healthy.

    Week 3 Recap

Buckeye Central 21, Fairport Harding 14

The Bucks struck first with a Jack Phillips to Caydin Jarvis 45-yard connection set up by a successful fake punt attempt and held that lead into the half. Phillips then kept it himself for a 25-yard score in the third quarter and found his twin, Alec, not long after for a 20-yard strike to go up 21-0. The Skippers responded with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth to pull within a touchdown, but Buckeye Central's defense stood its ground for the win.

    Cardington-Lincoln 46, Bucyrus 8

The Pirates scored a trio of touchdowns in the first quarter — Wyatt Denney from two yards out, Kalin Briggs from 45 out, Warren Garrison 19-yard run — before Bucyrus' Demaris Munn-Page returned a 70-yard fumble then rushed in for two to make it 21-8. Briggs ripped off a 62-yard run before the half to give Cardington a 28-8 lead at the break. Denney added two more in the third from 16 and 53 yards in the third to put the game out of reach.

Colonel Crawford 33, East Knox 0

The Eagles struck early with an 87-yard connection between Peyton Baker and Lucas Foy and never looked back. Dominic Dean rushed in from 16 yards to put Crawford up 14-0 after one. Connor McMichael then ripped off runs of 47 and seven in the second quarter, and 10 in the third, for the final three touchdowns of the game.

    Galion 42, Upper Sandusky 0

The Tigers started slow taking a 7-0 lead — Braxton Prosser to Jacob Chambers from seven yards out — after one. It didn't take long after that for the offense to capitalize off a stifling defensive effort. Braxton Stuckman rushed in from three yards out, Prosser hit Ayden Schmidt for 37 yards, then found Trey Longwell for a six-yard strike to make it 28-0 at the half. Galion would add two more scores in the third, Prosser to Chambers from 51 yards out and a Kane Hay 11-yard scamper, to cap off the big win.

    Wynford 33, Western Reserve 22

The Royals got on the board first when Brayden Campbell barreled in from three yards out, then doubled the advantage with a one-yard run from Campbell. Western Reserve's Hayden Keith responded from three yards out before Campbell scored from from three yards and one yard out for a 27-8 halftime lead. Anthony Evans made it 33-8 with a six-yard run before Keith rushed in from 14 out and Western Reserve's Jared Hipp blasted through the line from three yards out to put pressure on Wynford's defense. The Royals stood their ground and picked up their first win.
