Volunteer’s Strickler returns to gridiron
CHURCH HILL — For the first time in more than a decade, Volunteer’s Jackie Strickler will be back on the sidelines for football season. The veteran softball coach has stepped in as an assistant on interim head coach Mike Castle’s football staff for the 2024 season. While the NCAA transfer portal offers programs another avenue toward roster-building and talent acquisition, traditional recruiting of high school prospects never stops, and even in the current dead period those official visits in June are becoming commitment announcements in July and August before players kick off their own senior seasons. At Tennessee, head football coach Josh Heupel and the Vols are looking to build off blue-chip-laden classes in the previous two cycles and taking aim at a potential second top-10 class in three years.
1 person taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after crash on Alcoa Highway, authorities say
ALCOA, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Transportation said a crash on Alcoa Highway backed up southbound traffic for miles on Friday. The crash was reported at around 3:55 p.m. Eastern Time, according to TDOT. It closed a lane of the road, and TDOT said traffic was backed up for miles to near Montlake Drive — just past the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
City of Gatlinburg asks to avoid decorating with produce this fall after bear encounters
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Gatlinburg officials, along with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, are asking people to hold off on using real produce for fall displays.
