I was on City Council in 2016 when we made the decision to make a revenue neutral increase to sales taxes of +1.09 % with a corresponding reduction in property taxes from 33.88 mils to 27.08 mils. The reason for doing so was to respond to decades long flat property assessments and increasing sales taxes. This change would provide the school district with a more positive revenue stream in the future. Since then the school has been able to increase teacher salaries among other things.
