UPDATE: The San Miguel County Sheriff's Office has reopened the road, as of Thursday afternoon.

Experienced four-wheel-drive enthusiasts headed to Telluride may have to be patient when it comes to checking the notorious Black Bear Pass route off their bucket list.

According to the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office, the rough and narrow pass known for its technical nature and big exposure has been closed until further notice as of noon on July 25 due to a vehicle rollover in the 'stairs' section of the route.

The Sheriff's Office did report that the driver said there were no injuries related to the crash.

In the past, the length of temporary closures for similar reasons has varied. Given how narrow the route is, driving around a vehicle that's stuck on the road often isn't an option. This narrow nature can also pose issues when it comes to vehicle recovery.

Black Bear Pass is a prominent sight in the Telluride area, located above Bridal Veil Falls and recognizable thanks to steep switchbacks that climb the mountainside. Many find that even just walking the route can result in the 'vertigo' effect given the steep drop-off that flanks the side of the road.

Black Bear Pass has proven quite dangerous in the past, as well, as once a vehicle tumbles off the route in the area of the technical stretch of switchbacks, it tends to keep rolling down the mountainside.

Updates on the situation may be posted here .
