N.J. Public Defender names first-ever police accountability director
A veteran public defender will lead a new effort to track police and prosecutorial misconduct in cases handled by the office, Public Defender Jennifer Sellitti announced. NEW YORK—The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for New York City from noon until 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 6. Hot and humid conditions are forecast, with heat index values potentially reaching between 98°F and 100°F (36.6°-37.7°C) in parts of the city. There is also a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Macy's Fireworks Event Draws Crowds to Waterfront
HOBOKEN, NJ- The Macy’s Fireworks returned to the Hudson River on July 4th for the first time in ten years. There were five barges on the water with 60,000 shells to light up the sky. The southernmost barge lined up with 5th Street, near Sinatra Park. With people flocking to the waterfront for the best view in their droves, Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher took to X to thank the public safety teams for making the event “so safe and enjoyable.” Fisher also stated in her tweet: “For 2025: waterfront fixed, partner with HBA to promote businesses” and work with the various public transport services “so visitors and workers get home earlier.”  For more local news, visit TAPinto.net
College-Bound NYC Students Earn $10,000 Milken Scholars Award
Four New York City students have been selected to join the prestigious 2024 class of Milken Scholars. The scholarship Program honors high school seniors in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles County each year with a $10,000 cash prize and lifelong access to college advising, career counseling, internship assistance, community service opportunities, and a fund to help with graduate school applications, unpaid internships, study abroad programs, and other costs associated with their pursuit of a career.
Second Phase of Redevelopment at Kingsland Commons Set to Begin this Summer
Construction on the second phase development of Kingsland Commons, the former Greenpoint Hospital Campus, is set to begin this summer. The redevelopment will include an 18-story building with 311 permanently affordable homes serving low income residents including formerly homeless individuals and families. Construction is expected to be completed in April 2027.

Construction for the portico restoration and foundation waterproofing projects at Hoboken City Hall begins on Monday, July 8. WEST ORANGE, NJ — The township has hired LEW Environmental Services to ensure that rental owners are in compliance with the new state law requiring paint inspections to detect lead. Anyone who needs to have an inspection for lead in the paint will or has received a postcard. Visual inspections must be conducted by July 22, 2021, per the NJ Lead Safe Certification Act signed by Governor Phil Murphy on July 22, 2021.
