Most celebrities choose to keep the details about their divorces private. They'll release a generic statement asking for everybody to "respect their privacy at this difficult time" and the only information we get is from anonymous sources or court filings. But Billy Ray Cyrus and his estranged wife Firerose have gone...well, the complete opposite direction. It's already been messy since the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer filed for divorce from his wife, Australian singer Firerose, last month. The couple were married back in October, with the 62-year old Cyrus announcing his marriage to the 36-year old Firerose on Instagram after a surprise wedding ceremony. It didn't last long though, with the couple’s official date of separation listed as May 22, 2024, and Cyrus gave his soon-to-be ex-wife a deadline of May 24th to leave their home while giving her a $500-a-night stipend over ten days for temporary housing. The country music singer cited “inappropriate marital conduct” and “irreconcilable differences” in his divorce filing, and an
alleged credit card spending spree didn’t help the rocky marriage either… But in her response, Firerose claims Cyrus wanted out of the marriage one day after he discovered that she was planning on getting a double mastectomy, and accused the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer of "extreme verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse." She also claimed that she was "subjected to Husband’s persistent drug use accompanied with the consumption of marijuana which made Husband unpredictable and volatile towards Wife.” The response says that Cyrus would call Firerose a "selfish f**king b*tch," and that she postponed her surgery because she had nowhere to live and was relying on her then-husband's health insurance to pay for it. But Cyrus disputed the allegations, providing notes and text messages to Page Six
that he claims were sent to him by Firerose after he filed for divorce begging him to come back. And Billy Ray also disputed claims of abuse from Firerose in his latest court filing, while also alleging that HE was actually the one who was abused. Like I said, messy. And the couple seem perfectly fine with letting their divorce play out in the public eye, with Firerose giving an interview to Page Six accusing Billy Ray of isolating her from her friends and family, and going more into detail about the abuse that she claims to have suffered during her marriage. According to Firerose, whose real name is Johanna Hodges, the two met back in 2010 while Billy Ray was still married to his wife Tish. But 10 years later when they reconnected and began dating, he assured her that he was getting divorced. So Firerose was taken by surprise when Tish was finally the one to file for divorce after Firerose assumed the process had already begun. But as Firerose and Billy Ray began to prepare for their own wedding, she says that he was already verbally abusive - and that the stress led to her fainting and ending up in the hospital two days before they got married. Once they got married, Firerose claims that Billy Ray further isolated her from her friends and family by the rules that he had for his wife:
“Billy had very strict rules. I didn’t have a car. I was only allowed to go to the local chiropractor and allowed once a month to get my nails done … it was systematic isolation and I couldn’t find the courage to leave.” And she also claims that he even screened her text messages and emails: “If I had to send a text, I had to read it out to him for permission. It was the same for email.” Firerose also says that Billy Ray was controlling over who she was allowed to bring on their property - and wouldn't even allow her friends to come stay to take care of her when she was planning on having her mastectomy. And of the notes that she sent asking Billy Ray to take her back, she says that she tolerated the abuse because she was in love with him at the time:
“He’s attempting to use my loving notes as proof that he could not have been abusing me because I love him. But it’s because you love them that you tolerate this behavior.” According to Firerose, she's choosing to speak out to use her platform in order to help others who are going through the same situation, and she's now living with a friend in Tennessee. The divorce is scheduled for another court hearing today, but it sounds like this one could drag on for awhile - and neither spouse seems to have any problem letting it play out in the court of public opinion.
