United States Army veteran and country hitmaker Craig Morgan burst onto the country music scene in 2000 with his self-titled debut album. Since then, Morgan has released seven studio albums, two EPs, three compilation albums, and his memoir. With hits like “Something to Write Home About” and “Almost Home,” the patriotic country singer has served as an inspiration for a generation of young artists.

Today (July 17), the Kingston Springs, Tennessee native turns 60 years old. To celebrate his birthday, we’re looking back at some of the biggest hits from his 24 years in the country music world.

“Almost Home”—Craig Morgan’s First Hit Single

Craig Morgan released his debut single “Something to Write Home About” as the lead track from his debut self-titled album 2000. The song peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. His next three singles—two more from his debut and one from his sophomore outing I Love It—didn’t do as well. Then, he released “Almost Home” as the second single from the album at found traction. It peaked at No. 6, giving Morgan his first top-10 hit. It also landed at No. 59 on the Billboard Hot 100, his first entry on the all-genre survey.

Morgan co-wrote the song with Kerry Kurt. They left the song’s lyrics open to interpretation. Some believe that the homeless man’s admonition that he was “almost home” means that he almost reached home in his dream. Others believe that he meant that he had almost died and “gone home to Jesus.” Both Morgan and Kurt want listeners to come to their own conclusions about what the man meant.

“That What I Love About Sunday”—Morgan’s First No. 1

I Love It produced two more Top 40 country singles for Craig Morgan. Then, he released “That’s What I Love About Sunday” in November 2004 as the lead single from his 2005 album My Kind of Livin’. The song went to No. 1 on the country chart. Additionally, it peaked at No. 51 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, giving him his second entry on the chart. It spent four weeks at No. 1 on the country chart. It also made Morgan the first artist on Broken Bow Records to score a chart-topper.
