Carlos Alcaraz has been tipped to dominate tennis over the next few years, but how much do you know about the youngster’s parents Carlos Alcaraz Gonzalez and Virginia Garfia Escandon?

Having made his ATP Tour main draw debut at the age of 16 in February 2020, Alcaraz has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the top of men’s tennis as the following year he won his maiden singles title.

The 2022 season, though, was the one where made the world sit up and take note of his talent as he won four titles – including two ATP Masters 1000 titles – during the first half of the campaign before going on to win his maiden Grand Slam, the US Open, in September.

On the back of his success at Flushing Meadows, he also became the first teenager to top the ATP Rankings while he also became the youngest player to finish the year as world No 1.

Although he possesses some amazing natural talent, the values instilled by his parents during his formative years have been crucial to his success.

His parents have attended several high-profile matches and his mother, in particular, was seen celebrating wildly after he beat Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final at Wimbledon in 2023.

He, of course, went on to win Wimbledon as he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final.

Rising star Carlos Alcaraz Garfia, was born on 5 May 2003, to Carlos Alcaraz Gonzalez and Virginia Garfia Escandon in El Palmar, Murcia, Spain. He has three siblings an older brother Alvaro and two younger brothers Sergio and Jaime.

Carlos Alcaraz Sr is a former professional tennis player and the official ATP Tour website states that he reached a career-high of No 963 in the rankings back in 1990.

After his own career came to an end, Carlos Alcaraz Sr started working as a tennis academy director at the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia and, unsurprisingly, young Carlos started playing tennis at the very same club as soon as he could hold a racket.

“He began to play with his dad, and one day [his father] asked me to watch him. This kid, at four, five years old, was spectacular,” Kiko Navarro, one of Alcaraz Jr’s early coaches, told the Guardian in May this year.

“I knew from very young that he was incredible. I’m not going to say that I was thinking he was going to be world No 1 but I knew that I had a really good and different player on my hands.”

Carlos Alcaraz Sr has also been running the Carlos Alcaraz Tennis Academy by Reina at the Tiro de Pichón for nearly three decades and since Alcaraz Jr’s rise to the top, he has become a big sponsor of the academy.

Who is Carlos Alcaraz’s mother Virginia Garfia Escandon?

Virginia Garfia has stayed out of the limelight since her son became an international superstar, although she did attend his US Open final win over Casper Ruud and was also spotted during his run to the Wimbledon final.

Garfia is originally from Sevilla and she married Carlos Alcaraz Senior when she was in her 20s and they settled in Murcia.

In a 2022 interview, Carlos Alcaraz junior revealed: “Obviously, my parents control the money for me. To buy some golf clubs, which I love; I don’t ask permission, but for a good car, yes. I’m still fighting it.

“My father is tougher and my mother less, so to go out and those things I tell my mother. I don’t have time as such, but they always tell me ‘don’t be late’. As much as I try not to make any noise when I get home, they always wake up and catch me.”
