There are few better sights in tennis than Ons Jabeur in full flow.

And this year’s French Open has seen the Tunisian trailblazer surge back into form, after a largely disappointing season for the world No 9 to date.

Impressive victories over the likes of young guns Leylah Fernandez and Clara Tauson powered her into the last eight for the second straight year, equalling Amanda Coezter’s record for the most Slam quarter-finals reached by an African player.

Jabeur played well in her last eight contest but was ultimately outclassed by US Open champion and third seed Coco Gauff , who was too consistent in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

But the Tunisian was certainly the fan favourite out on Court Philippe Chatrier, and it’s not difficult to see why – with some trademark stunning shotmaking on display from the three-time Slam finalist.

Backhand brilliance

Jabeur was on full flight throughout the first set, and her backhand was a particular weapon for the Tunisian across the opening hour.

There were plenty of incredible shots to choose from, but this ‘air’ backhand from the 29-year-old was particularly impressive, with Gauff left stunned by the flight of her opponent’s shot – and the sheer power behind it.

It was clear at the start of the second set that Gauff – a finalist at this event in 2022 – was working her way into the match, and Jabeur did well to stay with her early on.

The Tunisian was under pressure as early as her first service game but worked her way out of it in impressive fashion.

After some impressive defensive movement, this amazing backhand down the line proved to be one of the most memorable of the contest.

There have been plenty of amazing points at Roland Garros this year – but this one may have been the best yet.

Jabeur was pushed pillar to post by Gauff, but somehow managed to stay in the rally, and produced a scintillating cross-court forehand to win the point.

Ultimately it was a defeat for the Tunisian, but she has looked full of confidence in Paris.

With the grass court season coming up, expect even more magic from Jabeur over the next few weeks.

Jabeur has reached the final at Wimbledon the past two years – losing the final to Elena Rybakina in 2022, and Marketa Vondrousova in 2023 – while she also reached the last eight in 2021, beaten by Aryna Sabalenka .

She has also won two WTA titles on the surface, in Birmingham and Berlin, and looks primed to be dangerous once again this summer.
