‘Novak Djokovic is more likely to play Wimbledon than not’, reveals former world No 7

Marion Bartoli has explained there is a “a greater chance” that Novak Djokovic will play at Wimbledon this year than miss the event through injury.

The former world No 7 revealed this information came from Djokovic’s physiotherapist, while she also declared the Serbian will be “one of the two favourites” at Wimbledon if he does play.

Many tennis analysts and former players have asserted that they expect Djokovic to miss Wimbledon due to the torn medial meniscus injury he suffered at the French Open.

Former US Open finalist Greg Rusedski recently spoke to Tennis365 about Djokovic’s injury situation.

“I’m pretty sure he won’t be at Wimbledon, but he might sneak the Olympics – though he won’t risk it if he’s not healthy. I think he’ll be back at the US Open with a bang, ready to go,” said Rusedski.

Djokovic sustained the injury during his five-set fourth round victory against Francisco Cerundolo at Roland Garros, before pulling out ahead of his quarter-final match with Casper Ruud.

The 37-year-old underwent surgery on his right knee in Paris and expressed his hope to “return to the court as soon as possible.”

Just over a week after his surgery, Djokovic shared footage of him training in the gym on Instagram with the caption “Progress.”

The 24-time Grand Slam champion is yet to provide an update on when his next tournament might be, but this post raised hope that his comeback could be sooner than initially expected.

Speaking on RMC Sport , Bartoli divulged that the feeling in Djokovic’s camp about his hopes of competing at Wimbledon is at odds with what has been claimed externally.

“You know, I know the physiotherapist who takes care of Novak’s rehabilitation well, he worked at Olympique de Marseille,” the 2013 Wimbledon champion began.

“And what I can tell you is that, internally, what is said is that there is a greater chance that Djokovic will play Wimbledon than the other way around.

“So we have to stop thinking that he won’t play at Wimbledon. And if he finally plays, of course he will be one of the two favourites.”

The 2024 Wimbledon Championships will begin on July 1, meaning Djokovic has just less than two weeks to prepare.

The current world No 3 is a seven-time champion at the All England Club and has lost just one completed match at the grass-court Grand Slam since 2016.
