Lacoste apologise after accidentally listing commemorative gear celebrating Novak Djokovic’s 25th Grand Slam

Novak Djokovic spent 428 weeks as world No 1.

A technical error in their online store has left Lacoste with egg on their proverbial face as they appeared to jump the gun with a celebration of Novak Djokovic’s 25th Grand Slam singles title.

The company hasn’t lost count of Djokovic’s Major trophy wins but instead saw a commemorative tracksuit which has been in the works listed as being for sale to US customers.

Since the Serbian player quit his prior kit sponsor, Uniqlo, in 2017 to sign a multi-year contract with Lacoste, the two have collaborated on a number of projects.

Last year, the partnership was extended through 2025.

As an early celebration of the Serb’s 25th Grand Slam victory, Lacoste delivered a limited edition tracksuit, but the move backfired as the item was listed for sale early.

The $350 tracksuit is a fleece sweatsuit that comes with a hoodie, tracksuit bottoms, as well as an organic cotton fleece.

The piece of commemorative kit also has the number ‘25’ along with the renowned crocodile badges of Lacoste on the chest and the thighs. The release of the design implied that the Serb had already won his 25th Grand Slam which he hasn’t.

A 25th Grand Slam title would have made Djokovic the sole holder of the record for the most Major titles in history, surpassing the record of 24 he currently shares with Australia’s Margaret Court.

Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open last season but his efforts to win a 25th have thus far been frustrated by the new guard.

Jannik Sinner won his maiden Grand Slam singles title in Australia, while Carlos Alcaraz added the French Open to his title wins at the 2022 US Open and Wimbledon in 2023.

Djokovic reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros before withdrawing with injury following a meniscus tear.

He now faces a race to be fit in time for Wimbledon which gets underway at the beginning of July.

Lacoste’s CEO Thierry Guibert took to social media to clear up what had gone wrong and to apologize for this mishap. He claimed that the issue was caused by ‘IT issues’.

Novak Djokovic ‘is pushing hard to play Wimbledon’ as he takes another big step towards a speedy recovery

“I have to apologize about that. It was a mistake on our side due to IT issues,” Guibert wrote on X.

Lacoste have released similar lines to celebrate Djokovic’s 23rd and 24th Grand Slam titles. However, the Serbian has said that he was told to stay tight-lipped about future projects with Lacoste.

“I have no idea. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve been instructed that I should not speak about anything publicly. No, those are the wonderful problems to have. If 25 comes right now in January, it would be amazing, whatever happens,” Djokovic said.

“I’m really glad there was a positive reaction from the fans and from people with 23 or 24 jackets. A lot of people wanted to have that jacket and hopefully Lacoste produced enough for everyone,” he added.

Djokovic remains hopeful of entering Wimbledon but most medical experts feel that three weeks is not long enough for him to recover from the surgery performed to repair the injury suffered in Paris.
