Coco Gauff says it will be "very weird" to see Rafael Nadal retire

A young German fan of Coco Gauff saw his dreams come true this week as he got to meet his favourite star in Berlin.

Gauff was in Germany for the Berlin Open event and agreed to meet the fan after he sent a message to one of her hitting partners.

It turned out to be an emotional moment for both Gauff and the fan as she realised just how much it meant to the young man.

The German youngster reputedly runs a fan page for the American star and was very nervous about finally getting to meet her.#

As the emotions welled up, Gauff shared an embrace with the fan.

“He was very shy at first and I could see that he was starting to get emotional and I was starting to cry,” Gauff said.

“Luckily, no tear fell, his eyes just watered.”But if a tear fell I would have cried because it’s just amazing how much what you do can have an impact on someone. The fact that he feels so happy for me just to say hello, just gave me so much emotion and it’s why I do it.

“His mom was there and she was really happy. Just for me to give someone that joy, I don’t know what his trials are in his life, just for me to have an impact in that way means a lot to me.

“I’ve been talking to him online and hopefully I can try to see him again this week.”

Gauff has won just one title this season and that came back in Auckland but she has reached four big seme-finals having gained the last four at the Australian and French Opens as well as the WTA 1000 events at Indian Wells and Rome.

She believes that the key difference is that she is losing to top players, who just don’t give you chances to recover from your mistakes.

“If you’re playing against anybody in I would say the top, like, 10, I feel like the margins are smaller,” she explained after her loss to Swiatek in Paris.

“Even against Ons I felt like my margins were smaller. And that’s just when you play higher-ranked players, you know that some mistakes that you make aren’t going to — when you’re playing somebody who maybe isn’t as experienced or just not as talented maybe, you know that eventually you’re going to get back some of the mistakes.

“When you’re playing anybody, honestly, in the top 10 at this point, you know that you can’t give anybody free points. Yeah, I feel like against her and against any top player you do feel like your margins are smaller because you know they’re probably not going to give that back to you. If they do, it’s not maybe at a scale of somebody who’s less experienced.”
