Andy Murray has not officially withdrawn from Wimbledon.

Andy Murray has made “no decision” about whether to withdraw from Wimbledon or not, according to Great Britain’s Davis Cup captain Leon Smith.

British newspaper The Telegraph reported earlier on Sunday that Murray had withdrawn from Wimbledon – with the news widely reported elsewhere in the aftermath.

The article suggested that Murray had had surgery on a spinal cyst, throwing his likely SW19 and Olympic Games out of the window.

However, posts on social media by the ATP Tour, among other accounts, reacting to the supposed announcement were later deleted.

And, speaking on the BBC ahead of the Queen’s Club Championship final today, Smith – who has known Murray for almost two decades – claimed that the former world No 1 had not withdrawn.

“Look, I have seen the stories on social media and that is not my understanding,” he said.

“This has come from one source and it has a knock-on effect with everyone reporting on it. He obviously went through a procedure yesterday and we will have to wait and see now.

“My understanding is that no decision has been made. Let’s hope for the best for Andy.”

Murray’s SW19 chances were cast into doubt at Queen’s earlier this week, when he retired in the opening set of his round two encounter versus Jordan Thompson.

The Brit, a five-time champion in the tournament, had been in high spirits the previous day, downing Alexei Popyrin in three sets – in his 1,000th professional match.

However, Murray looked uncomfortable walking onto court for his match against Thompson on Wednesday, and received a standing ovation from the crowd after his retirement.

All eyes will now be on if and when Murray makes an official announcement about his Wimbledon participation.

The All England Club are thought to have saved a doubles wildcard for him and brother Jamie, should they decide to play, while he is still in the singles entry list.

Should Murray be unable to play, it may signal a sad end to a glorious career.

The three-time Slam winner has been in inconsistent form in recent months, but it was hoped that – after making a miraculous return from hip resurfacing – he would get to retire on his own terms.

“He hasn’t had any luck for a long while now,” said John Lloyd, another former Davis Cup captain of Murray’s.

“It’s just one of those things. He’s been playing so well in practice, everyone has been so impressed with him. He just wants to get out there and play.

“But with his injuries, it’s just one after the other. It must drive him mad, quite frankly. Obviously I hope he can get ready for Wimbledon.”
