Novak Djokovic’s recovery from injury leaves former world No 1 in disbelief

Andy Roddick has admitted he “can’t believe” the fact Novak Djokovic has a chance of competing at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships after his meniscus injury.

The 2003 US Open winner described Djokovic’s recovery after his surgery as “incredible” and lauded the Serbian by saying he is “a little bit different.”

Djokovic tore his meniscus in the second set of his five-set fourth round victory over Francisco Cerundolo at the 2024 French Open earlier this month.

The tennis legend was due to face Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals but was forced to pull out of the tournament and subsequently had an operation on his right knee.

Many thought that Wimbledon , which will begin on July 1, would come too soon for Djokovic, but the 37-year-old arrived in London yesterday and has already practised at the All England Club.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion is yet to confirm whether he will compete at the grass-court Major, where he is a seven-time winner. The Serbian is one Wimbledon crown away from equalling his great rival Roger Federer’s record.

The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is also a huge priority for Djokovic, with the tennis event to be staged at Stade Roland Garros from July 27 to August 4.

On an episode of the Tennis Channel Live podcast, Roddick explained he had suffered the same injury as Djokovic during his own career and was not able to return to training so quickly.

“I had a torn meniscus once upon a time and I wasn’t doing this. He is not like us. He is a little bit different,” said the former world No 1.

“This is incredible, I can’t believe it. The fact that he’s posting this, he wants the attention of flirting with a Wimbledon bid and being healthy.

“He is certainly not dealing with this injury privately. This is crazy to think that he had surgery like a week ago.”

Former Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard also gave her thoughts on Djokovic’s chances of competing at Wimbledon.

“If it’s humanly possible, Novak will be able to do it,” the Canadian said on the same podcast. “And it’s kind of starting to look like it’s humanly possible for him to make Wimbledon.”
