Andy Murray is still targetting a final appearance at Wimbledon, with the latest announcement from the All England Club giving a big hit that his plans could still be on track.

The two-time Wimbledon champion appeared to be ruled out of what could be his final appearance in the tournament when news broke on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the tournament following back surgery.

The ATP Tour were quick to report that Murray was “sadly out of Wimbledon” after undergoing back surgery on Saturday.

However, the post on X was promptly deleted and it later transpired it was posted on the back of a report in the Telegraph, which suggests Murray will be out for six weeks following a procedure on a spinal cyst.

Murray’s mother Judy expressed her annoyance over the release of her son’s ‘private medical records’ in an angry post on X, formerly know as Twitter.

“When your private medical details are leaked to the media by someone you thought you could trust. So disappointing,” wrote Murray. “And – FYI – not ruled out yet.”

Tennis365 understand there is real annoyance in the Murray camp over the story that was quickly dismissed by Great Britain Davis Cup captain Leon Smith.

“I have seen the stories on social media and that is not my understanding,” Smith told the BBC.

“This has come from one source and it has a knock-on effect with everyone reporting on it. He obviously went through a procedure (on his back) and we will have to wait and see now.

“My understanding is that no decision has been made. Let’s hope for the best for Andy.”

The prospect of Murray playing in the singles draw at the All England Club a little over a week after he underwent back surgery, however minor it may have been, seems highly ambitious.

Yet the latest and what is essentially the final round of announcements of wildcards for Wimbledon arrived on Monday, with one space still to be filled.

The men’s doubles wildcard list still has an empty slot and it is believed to have been reserved for Murray and his brother Jamie to make an emotional farewell appearance together on court.

The Murray brothers have confirmed their plans to play together at Wimbledon for the first time this year, with Jamie excited by the prospect of trying to win a Wimbledon title to round off their careers in style.

“It would obviously be really cool to do it,” said Jamie last month.

“It’s something that we probably wanted to do at some point in our career and maybe now is the only opportunity to do it. So maybe it’s a case of now or never, but yeah, we’ll see.”

All England Club officials are keen to give Murray every opportunity to recover from his back surgery. There is an expectation that he will try and hit some balls later this week and as weighs up his hopes of playing.

Entering the doubles would give him a few extra days to recover and as Roger Federer confirmed in the final match of his career as he played with Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup, playing with a partner is a little more manageable when you are battling physical issues.

The Murray brothers may well play their matches on Wimbledon’s iconic Centre Court if Andy can get himself fit in time and history tells us this is one sporting warrior who can never be counted out.
