TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Local representatives say they are shocked and saddened by the tragic shooting.

After the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump, several local government figures have shared their reactions. Vigo County Republican Party chairman Randy Gentry is in Milwaukee preparing for the Republican National Convention. He says that things changed quickly in the city.

“Once this occurred, then we saw a ratcheting up, a lot of activity,” Gentry said. “Police presence has quadrupled if not more than that. Just lots of activity, so I’m sure we are going to be in for a very long week, and obviously security and safety is top priority.”

Another was working at the GOP booth at the Vigo County Fair. Republican candidate for Vigo Co. Council at large Brenda Wilson says that several people came to make sure they were aware of the news.

“Did you know? Did you know that President Trump got shot? Oh my gosh, I hope he’s okay and we’re praying for him. So that’s the general consensus,” Wilson said. “We need to pray for him because this was a horrible thing.”

Statements have also been released on X by the following:

Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun – “Political violence is unacceptable. Praying that cooler heads prevail on all sides of the aisle and across the nation. We must not resort to violence. Democracy does not involve bullets.”

Vigo Co. Commissioner Mark Clinkenbeard – “Prayers for our country right now! We are all Americans and this is not acceptable.”

Senator Todd Young – “A terrifying scene at President Trump’s event this afternoon. Praying that he and all in attendance are ok and that calm will prevail. Violence is never the answer.”
