TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Maryland Community Church has been providing free home repairs as a part of their Hope Week.

Kids and adults of the church combined their efforts to provide service to low income, elderly, or disabled homeowners.

Maryland Church’s Hope Week is an opportunity for students, grades 6th through 12th, to provide service to their local community. The idea was brought to Terre Haute, by a pastor, all the way from Texas.

“The idea started about five years ago, I think it actually moved here from Texas. The Pembleton’s, who is a pastor, a campus pastor out of Maryland 46 campus. He did it out of their church and he brought it here, and we loved it.”

    David Fisher – Leader

The repairs are being done to homes in the 12 points community. One of the leaders says the idea of finding the homes was simple, but the process of repairing them took a lot of time and effort.

The children of Maryland Community Church spend the entire week with each other, sleeping at one of the church’s locations. They have chores, such as cleaning up after meals, and they are required to sacrifice other obligations. Yet, one volunteer says, it’s well worth it.

“I had to give up a bunch of my practices and whatnot, for sports, but to come out here and help others, it was worth giving up my practices for.”

    Leonardo Ixba – Student
