TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Funeral services for Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse were held at Hulman Center in Terre Haute, and a large crowd came to pay their respects.

The local community paid their respects to the Plasse family. Vigo County Sheriff’s Office chief of operations Derek Fell says the outpour of support is fitting for a man who spent his life helping and caring for others.

“He’s the real deal,” Fell said. “He’s sincere, he’s probably the most genuine person I’ve ever met. He cares about people. He can meet you one time and he cares about you. He remembers most everyone’s name that he’s ever met. He is the real deal.”

Sheriff Plasse brought leadership and pride to everything he did. Former Terre Haute mayor Duke Bennett says people quickly realized how much he will be missed.

“Everything that he touched was done well and everybody knew it and was very supportive of him,” Bennett said. “That’s why the outpouring now that he’s gone, everybody, they know they are going to miss that. It’s a big void that you just can’t fill.”

Sheriff John Plasse left behind a legacy that will live on for years to come.
