Bike lanes, solar, energy conservation among programs under $50 million grant for New Orleans
The city of New Orleans has been awarded nearly $50 million for programs aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 38,000 metric tons over the next five years, including an expansion of bike sharing and bikeways, commercial and city building energy conservation programs, and residential solar panel installations, the federal Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday.
New Orleans civil rights icon Tessie Prevost dead at 69
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Funeral services will be held Saturday for one of four Black girls who helped integrate New Orleans public schools in 1960. Tessie Prevost Williams, known as one of the “New Orleans Four,” died July 6 following a series of medical complications. She was 69. On Nov. 14, 1960, Prevost Williams, along with 6-year-olds Leona Tate and Gail Etienne walked into McDonogh No. 19 Elementary School as groups of white people spit, cursed and threw rocks at them. On that same day, Ruby Bridges integrated William Frantz Elementary School. The girls’ history-making treks came six years after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education ruling made segregated schools unconstitutional. On Friday, Prevost Williams’ flag-draped casket will lie in state at Gallier Hall in New Orleans from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Funeral services will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday at Branch Bell Baptist Church in the city’s Lower 9th Ward, and a traditional jazz brass band will accompany the funeral procession.
Accused house swindler charged with attempted murder, pleads not guilty
NEW ORLEANS — A man accused of stealing houses from at least seven different people using forged or fabricated deeds pled not guilty to attempted murder Monday for allegedly shooting a man in a February drive-by. Police allege Jonathan Burden pulled up in a car alongside a man who was friends with Burden’s ex-girlfriend and shot him in the right shoulder. The man alleged Burden fired about 10 shots into his car at about 7:30 p.m. February 1 and hit him once. The man, who did not want to be identified, said he was lucky to be alive.
Man Accused in Maine Child Death Held on $250K Bail
A man who's accused of causing the death of a child who stopped breathing at a Maine Walmart is being held on $250,000 bail. Aziayh Scott, 23, of Owls Head was arrested in New Orleans, Louisiana in June and charged with manslaughter for the death of Quayshawn Wilson, 22-months old, of Owls Head. Police say Scott is originally from Louisiana, but had recently moved to Maine and was living with his girlfriend and their child. Scott and the child's mother moved back to Louisiana after Quayshawn died.

A recent Facebook post by Barclay Mullins has gone viral, sparking widespread conversation and concern about distracted driving on Louisiana's interstates and roadways.
