Carl Hendrick Louis is Willliam Still, a black man who lives in Philadelphia and is instrumental in the Underground Railroad movement and the desperate journeys from south to north. One day, an older man, Peter Friedman, (Brin D. Coats) walks into his office. He is downtrodden, but defiant, with his determination to find his relatives in the north. He has traveled from Alabama, leaving his wife and children behind. Still, by contrast, is well-dressed and refers to the visitor as “Sir.” That is so unlike Fiedman’s treatment in the south that Friedman becomes suspicious.
