Two wildfires believed to have been caused by lightning strikes have caused significant damage in areas of San Augustine County, officials reported.
Wildfire coverage surged during the day.
The regions south of Highway 103 along FM 705 saw the worst damage.
On Saturday afternoon, the Hebron Cemetery Wildfire initially swept through 40 acres.
Fire crews contained it at about 75 acres later that day.
Another fire burned 150 more acres.
However, containment efforts here were more successful, securing an estimated 65% of the area.
County Judge Jeff Boyd corroborated these facts.
He highlighted that a lack of suitable access points could cause the fires to burn through more land.
To combat this, forest service planes, local volunteer fire departments, and teams from the Texas Department of Emergency Management and the Texas & US Forest Service have all been deployed.
There have been no evacuations yet.
Judge Boyd, however, warned residents near or in affected areas, especially those on County Roads 4600, 4610, and 4615, to be ready to evacuate.
Under the current arid conditions, wildfires can reignite quickly.
