Deep East Texas residents have long struggled with limited broadband and cellular access.

The Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG), led by their Executive Director Lonnie Hunt, is addressing this problem.

The organization is setting out to eliminate the digital divide, which leaves around 28.5% of the region's homes without broadband.

A $42 million project is at the core of DETCOG's plan.

The project consists of a fixed wireless network in the counties of San Augustine, Newton, Polk, San Jacinto, and Tyler.

    The goal is universal connectivity.

While not a full solution, fixed wireless is a crucial step forward, offering wider coverage than fiber-only would.

Lonnie Hunt acknowledged the struggles of rural residents in attracting major internet service providers and promised that DETCOG's initiatives will go beyond the current project.

More plans are in place to support efforts to improve broadband access in the region.
