There's a growing issue of 'food deserts' - areas where access to affordable and nutritious food is limited - in South Texas. In response, national retail firm, Dollar General, is expanding its grocery offerings. The company has introduced DG Markets to serve rural areas such as Falfurrias, which often lack essential food items. Residents, like Claudia Sanchez, appreciate the options offered by DG Markets, including staples like ground beef, milk, and eggs.
The gap left by the lack of bigger retail stores, like HEB or Walmart, is gradually being filled by Dollar General. Spokesperson for Dollar General, Crystal Luce, confirms that the expansion of DG Market reflects the company's dedication to addressing 'food deserts'. Currently, over 4,400 stores offer produce, with plans to increase this to 10,000 in the next few years, reinforcing Dollar General's mission.
There are plans to open an additional store in Alice after the start of the New Year. Meanwhile, several local Dollar General stores already include small produce sections. These efforts aim to offer healthier and more affordable food options to people in these regions.
