On February 6, 2024, a meet-and-greet was held in Texarkana with Governor Greg Abbott in support of Texas House candidate and Republican Chris Spencer. The campaign appearance was arranged by Spencer’s team and was held at the Texarkana Convention Center inside the Hilton Inn and Suites at 1:30 p.m. Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe began the event by introducing Republican candidate Chris Spencer to the room. Chris Spencer addressed his supporters briefly before introducing Texas’s Governor, Greg Abbott.

“I want to thank everybody for being here today- so excited about having Governor Greg Abbott here. I think we all can agree that he is the best Governor in the History of Texas.”

Chris Spencer, the candidate slated to run for District 1 House Representative, then introduced Patty Terrell, who led everyone in the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Kirby Hollingsworth led a prayer that followed.

Chris Spencer began to speak about Texas’s current issue of border security. He expressed that our Governor is doing everything he can to secure our border. Chris Spencer also highlighted how the Governor has bussed illegal immigrants to other states in extreme measures to protect Texas. Spencer said that we need conservative leaders and that he would support the Governor in all his efforts to secure our borders. Chris Spencer then introduced Governor Greg Abbott to the room.

Governor Greg Abbott on East Texas Values = Governor Abbott began speaking about his roots in nearby Longview, Texas. Abbott talked about the value contrast between East Texas and places such as Austin, where values in Austin are far more liberal. Abbott pointed out that he and Spencer share the same conservative values.

“It’s one thing to go around telling people about your values. It’s another, living those values every single day like Chris Spencer does.”

Governor Abbott expressed the importance of electing someone who carries the same values as East Texans.

    Texas Economy and Outlook

The economy and inflation under what Abbott dubbed as “Biden-omics,” is a present problem for Texans. Abbott stated that Spencer would be best suited to handle these issues because he is incredibly experienced in business and has been a leader in economic development organizations. Abbott then proudly stated Texas is number one in the country for the newest and most jobs created under his leadership as Texas’s Governor. Abbott spoke about Texas’s great economy saying that Texas will soon surpass France’s economy and become the 7th the largest economy in the world. Abbott also brought out how Texas also had the largest budget surplus of any state in the United States just this past year, which resulted in massive property tax cuts for Texans and when returning to Austin, Texans could be looking at another 20-billion-dollar budget surplus, which would lead to more property tax cuts.

Current Educational and Cultural Conflicts Abbott then moved to speak about the cultural phenomenon taking the country by storm that he called, “woke-ism.” Abbott spoke about the law he passed to ban biological males from competing in women’s sports, saying he worked with Riley Gaines, a female athlete who became and elite swimmer and was forced by the NCAA to compete against a biological man. Gaines tied with the male swimmer and the award was still given to the male competitor. Gaines collaborated with Governor Abbott to pass the law that protected women’s sports in Texas from biological males competing in them. Abbott told East Texans that Chris Spencer shares his values to keep this sort of thing out of Texas. Abbott then brought up the current issues in the Dallas School system regarding gender change. Abbott spoke firmly against this form of indoctrination and vowed that Chris Spencer would help keep Texas’s educational focus on core curriculum.

Second Amendment Rights for Texans Abbott highlighted the respect Texas has for the Second Amendment and revealed that Gary VanDeaver, the current representative for the Texas House, voted against expanding Texan’s Second Amendment gun rights. Abbott told East Texans to elect Chris Spencer to protect Texan’s gun rights in the future.

“The number one issue- I need staunch advocates in the Texas House of Representatives who have my back, who work to support me to ensure that I’m going to have the tools I need to secure our border. Chris will get that done.”

    Border Security

Abbott recalled that just 4 years ago, under former president Donald Trump’s administration, Texas had the most secure borders it had seen in over 40 years. Abbott stated that under Biden’s administration, Trump’s previous policies were abandoned, and the Biden administration has ignored the laws in place to protect the country.

“More than 8 million people have crossed the border illegally under Joe Biden. That’s unbearable.”

Governor Greg Abbott stated Texas has a right to defend its own borders. Abbott stated that Texas is building the same wall President Trump had intended to build and it is currently under construction. Abbott also ensured to point out Texas’s National Guard which Abbott referred to as, “incredible.” Abbott said that the National Guard has put up more than one hundred miles of razor wire on the fences that are helping prevent illegal immigration. Abbott stated that the Federal Government had taken control of a park in Eagle Pass, Texas where illegal immigrants were allowed to cross by the thousands. Abbott stated that since the Texas National Guard has taken it over, they have had very few encounters; with just three being caught and arrested in one day. There were three to four thousand illegal immigrants crossing in that area previously.

“Unless and until Joe Biden Steps up and does his job to secure the border, Texas will continue to bus migrants to sanctuary cities like New York, Chicago and L.A.”

As Abbott wrapped up his speech he told East Texans,“I bring all this up because for me to continue to protect you, I have to have partners who will work with me. I’m in Texarkana today because I want you to help me send one of those partners to Austin, Texas, by sending Chris Spencer to represent you in House District 1.

He and I are going to work together to keep Texas the best state in the greatest country in the history of the world.”

After Governor Abbott was done speaking, supporters had a chance to meet the Governor and photos were taken of Chris Spencer and Greg Abbott together. Spencer’s campaign website shows he is focusing on issues such as second Amendment rights, supporting Israel, eliminating Democrat Party Chairs in the Texas House, parental empowerment, eliminating property taxes, pro-life initiatives and supporting Former President Donald Trump for reelection. Candidates running for District 1 are Gary VanDeaver, Dale Huls and Chris Spencer. The general election is on November 5, 2024. The primary will be held March 5, 2024, and the primary runoff will be May 28, 2024.
